A team of fourth-year students from Belgorod State University’s Medical Institute recently earned a silver medal at the 2nd All-Russian competition, “Algorithm of Salvation,” focused on providing first aid and psychological support.
The event took place at Kuban State Medical University and featured 22 teams from various universities across Russia. Representing BelSU were Varvara Drokina and Yaroslav Lykov, both in the General Medicine program, under the leadership of team captain Dmitry Slobodjanik.
The competition challenged participants to tackle a series of simulated emergency scenarios. The first task involved providing assistance in a dental office where a patient experienced seizures and inadvertently injured the dentist in a moment of distress. The BelSU team successfully resuscitated the patient through cardiopulmonary resuscitation and offered first aid to the dentist and psychological support to a bystander who was reacting aggressively to the situation.
In the second scenario, the students had to respond to an incident in a vivarium where a group of snakes had fallen on an elderly disabled man. The arriving ambulance medics were tasked with aiding the victim.
The next challenge simulated a traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a car, requiring the team to assist four victims who did not speak Russian, as well as one individual exhibiting a hysterical reaction.
The final task involved providing aid to individuals trapped under rubble, where the students had to administer first aid independently while also offering remote support to those who could not be reached directly.
The BelSU team has successfully navigated all these scenarios, and the competition jury awarded Belgorod State University second place on the winners’ podium.
“We would like to dedicate our victory to the Day of the Emergency Medical Worker, celebrated on April 28. This achievement is also a tribute to our mentors, who not only delivered theoretical lectures but also shared their practical knowledge and instilled in us a deep desire to help others and save lives,” said team captain Dmitry Slobodjanik. The team's mentors included Natalia Obolonkova, an associate professor in the Department of Faculty Therapy, and Lidiya Potapova from the emergency medicine service of the local emergency medical station.
